VANESSA CASTILLO (She/her)
General Studies - 2022
What brought you to KPU and your program of study?
I love how KPU has smaller class sizes which really made my learning experience positive. The professors were amazing and I truly felt they cared about me as a student, and my success. KPU is a big part of my story and I’m grateful I had the opportunity to even give the Address to Graduands during my KPU Convocation in 2022.
Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?
I am currently an Elementary school teacher in the lower mainland. I teach grade 1/2 and I teach my students all subjects, but more importantly I foster a kind, caring, welcoming classroom environment.
Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?
KPU has strengthened my foundation in what I do now as an Elementary school teacher. Just like my professors at KPU, every day when I teach, I do my best to plant seeds in my students’ hearts. I want them to not only grow up successfully but also with a good heart. Just like my professors at KPU, I meet each student where they’re at and do my best to bring them as far as possible in their educational journey. I do my best to make a positive impact on my students’ lives just as all of my KPU professors have.
What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?
Advice I would give KPU students is to stay resilient, never give up, continue working hard for your dreams and trust that your efforts will pay off. It’s also important to embrace challenges, they are your opportunity to learn and grow. Believe in yourselves and anything is possible!
