Psychology - 2019

What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

When I initially applied to KPU, I started off taking science courses and slowly over the years found myself gravitating to psychology and counselling courses. It was in my third year when I changed my major and it was the best decision. I decided to purse my Masters in Counselling Psychology once I graduated from KPU. The psychology program taught me so much about myself and I carry that with me still.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

I am the co-founder and co-owner of Luxia Counselling, which started in 2023. I manage the clinic/admin end of things (such as billing to insurance providers, taking calls/emails, content creating, and hosting mental health events) as well as provide counselling services to clients in the community (individual, couples and family counselling-I work with a diverse range of clients in person and online since the past 5 years). I am currently applying for my doctoral degree to further enhance my knowledge and help my clients.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

What has been the most valuable to me are the relationships with peers and professors I made. I have learned so much from those who are around me and that makes me who I am today. My willingness to always want to help people has inspired me towards the mental health field and learning from expert professors has shaped my perspectives in deep meaningful ways.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

I would say to always keep going. Yes, in the beginning it all feels so scary since there’s so much unknown. Trust yourself and take it one step at a time. There’s no rush to get to the finish line, enjoy the process as you go through it!
