KYLE BENNING
Journalism - 2014
What brought you to KPU and your program of study?
I was a student in the journalism program. Kwantlen’s program spoke to me the most because of its focus on developing my writing and storytelling skills.
Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?
My current position is Assistant News Director at 1130 NewsRadio. Day-to-day I help oversee a staff of roughly two dozen as we cover the largest stories across Metro Vancouver. As well as reporting, I’m also responsible for training young journalists and helping them navigate their career path.
Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?
The writing skills I learned here have been vital, but earlier in my career I also worked as an on-air reporter with Global News. The photography skills I learned also supported the development of my skills as a videographer and journalist who films their own content.
What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?
Hustle. Hard work and dedication beats talent every time. A combination of both is great, but I’ve seen a lot of young journalists end their career short because they were not ready to work. Use this time to find what you’re passionate about and work toward that goal. If it wasn’t for the drive and passion I discovered at Kwantlen, I would not be where I am today.
