JESSICA CLAYTON-CARROLL

What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

I was introduced to the Wilson School of Design while completing the Design Formation program at Langara. Interior design had always been a passion of mine, and after learning more about KPU's program, it felt like that was my next step to further my career.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

I have been working full time as a Junior Interior Designer at a design studio since December 2024. My day to day responsibilities include developing concept presentations, sourcing and ordering materials for client meetings, preparing AutoCAD construction drawing packages, and creating 3D renderings in SketchUp. I also support project coordination and collaborate with team members throughout the design process.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

The technical skills I developed at WSD have been very helpful in my career. The program provided a strong foundation in design software, construction documentation, and problem-solving, which allowed me to feel confident when I entered the industry. Overall, the program was well structured and gave me the tools and knowledge needed to feel prepared while continuing to grow professionally.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

Start building your professional network before you graduate. Attend industry events, connect with professionals, and take advantage of opportunities to meet people in the field. You never know which connection may lead to a future opportunity, mentorship, or job. The relationships you build during your studies can be just as valuable as the skills you learn in the classroom.
