ERICKA ELGIE
Human Resources Management - 2024
What brought you to KPU and your program of study?
I enrolled in the Post-Baccalaureate Diploma in Human Resources Management at KPU because I had always envisioned a career in Human Resources. Even before entering the field, I was fascinated by the impact HR professionals have on both organizations and employees. HR is more than policies and procedures—it is about helping people succeed, creating opportunities, and ensuring everyone is treated fairly and given the chance to reach their full potential.
When I was exploring schools, KPU stood out because of its practical, career-focused approach to learning. Studying at the Civic Plaza campus was an incredible experience. The location placed us right in the heart of a professional environment, making it easy to connect classroom learning with the realities of the workplace.
The diverse student community also allowed me to learn from people with different backgrounds, perspectives, and experiences, which is invaluable in a profession centered on understanding and supporting people.
Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?
I currently work as an HR and Payroll Coordinator, and one of the things I enjoy most about my role is that no two days are ever the same.
On quieter days, I focus on reviewing policies, supporting HR initiatives, ensuring compliance, and helping create a positive and inclusive work environment. I continuously look for ways to improve processes and enhance the employee experience.
Payroll days are especially busy and rewarding. I process payroll for both salaried and hourly employees across multiple locations. Managing payroll across different jurisdictions has strengthened my organizational skills and understanding of employment standards and payroll regulations.
One of the most meaningful parts of my role is supporting employees. Often, I become a listening ear for team members who have questions, concerns, or challenges. I strive to ensure employees feel heard, respected, and supported. Building trust and helping people navigate workplace situations is one of the most rewarding aspects of working in HR.
I also enjoy organizing employee engagement initiatives and company events. These opportunities allow me to bring people together, strengthen workplace culture, and create positive experiences that contribute to employee satisfaction and morale.
Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?
KPU fully equipped me with the knowledge, skills, and confidence needed to begin my career in Human Resources.
One of the most valuable lessons I gained was confidence in my abilities. Through coursework, presentations, group projects, and practical assignments, I learned how to communicate professionally, think critically, and contribute meaningfully in workplace discussions.
The support I received from KPU also helped me develop a strong professional brand. Employers have often complimented my resume for being well-written, organized, and professional—skills that I developed through KPU.
Beyond technical HR knowledge, KPU helped me recognize and leverage my transferable skills. Working with diverse classmates taught me how to collaborate with people from different cultures, perspectives, and experiences. These experiences prepared me for the realities of today's diverse workplaces and strengthened my ability to build meaningful relationships.
Most importantly, KPU helped me understand myself—my strengths, my values, and the unique contributions I can bring to an organization. That self-awareness continues to guide my career growth and professional development.
What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?
Take advantage of every opportunity to learn while you are at KPU. The knowledge, experiences, and resources available to you are incredibly valuable, but you must be willing to make the most of them.
Build your confidence by actively participating in class discussions, group projects, networking opportunities, and extracurricular activities. Confidence doesn't appear overnight—it grows through experience, preparation, and continuous learning.
KPU offers many resources designed to help students succeed. Use them. Seek guidance from instructors, attend workshops, connect with classmates, and explore opportunities outside the classroom.
While technology and AI can be useful tools, don't rely on them to do all your learning. The process of researching, analyzing, solving problems, and developing your own ideas may take more time, but that process is where real growth happens. The confidence that comes from truly understanding your work and knowing the value you bring is something no technology can replace.
Finally, never stop learning. Graduation is not the finish line—it's the beginning. Stay curious, continue developing your skills, embrace new challenges, and never limit yourself. The most successful professionals are those who remain open to growth throughout their careers.
KPU gave me the foundation to start my HR journey, but it also taught me something even more important: with the right mindset, continuous learning, and confidence in yourself, your potential is limitless.
