CHARLY THANKACHAN

What brought you to KPU and your program of study?

I came to KPU because I wanted to pursue my dream of becoming a nurse and make a positive difference in people’s lives. I had more than five years of gap in my practice and I was referred to do GNIE program at KPU when I submitted my documents to the board of nursing in BC. Through my program of study, I have gained valuable knowledge, skills, and confidence that have helped me grow both personally and professionally.

Can you briefly describe your current position and your main day to day responsibilities?

I am currently working as a Registered Nurse in the surgical unit at Vancouver General Hospital. My role involves providing comprehensive care to patients before and after surgery, monitoring their condition, administering medications, managing pain, performing assessments, and collaborating with the healthcare team to ensure safe and effective patient care.
On a day-to-day basis, I support patients throughout their recovery journey, educate patients and families about treatment plans and discharge care, respond to changes in patients’ conditions, and advocate for their physical and emotional well-being. Working in a fast-paced surgical environment has strengthened my clinical skills, critical thinking, and ability to provide compassionate, patient centered care.

Which skills, knowledge, or experiences from KPU have been most valuable in your career so far?

One of the most valuable experiences from KPU was the clinical component of the nursing program. The clinical placements provided me with hands-on experience in real healthcare settings and helped me become familiar with the Canadian healthcare system. Through these experiences, I developed important nursing skills such as patient assessment, communication, critical thinking, time management, and teamwork. The clinical training also helped me build confidence in providing safe, compassionate, and patient centered care. I am thankful to my clinical instructors and lab instructors.

What advice would you give current KPU students who want to build a successful career after graduation?

My advice to current students is to use all your learning opportunities. Especially clinical placements and lab experiences. These experiences help build confidence, develop practical skills, and prepare you for the realities of your profession.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, seek guidance from instructors and mentors, and learn from every experience. Building strong communication, teamwork, and critical-thinking skills is just as important as academic success.

It's very important is to stay persistent and believe in yourself. There may be challenges, but hard work and a positive attitude will help you achieve your goals.
